Eddy street

‘Eddy street’ is part of a body of work which explores the relationship between repetition, space and pattern in the urban landscape. This piece is based on a photo I took in San Francisco. The repeated forms and neglected buildings caught at first my attention, It is located between more prosperous districts and is a low income housing neighborhood, with hotels used for single room occupancy. Walking through it brought a lot of mixed feelings. It is slowly improving with new programs with a view to becoming a mixed and diverse neighborhood. In the background the town hall with its powerful dome is purposely toned down.
I screen printed block by block on calico using madder root and pomegranate skins pastes to highlight the street, and logwood paste for the rest.

Exhibited at the Signal Arts Centre in September 2020.

Hand printed on calico fabric

(madder root, pomegranate skins, logwood, indigo)
